If you want to start building up your toy chest but don’t know where to start? With endless options, dildo shopping can definitely feel a little overwhelming. But if you’re brand new to dildos you’ll want to choose your beginner dildo wisely.

In this article, we’ll go over 5 tips that will help you choose the best first dildo for you.

#1 Consider dildo width and length

This is one of the most important things to consider when choosing a beginner dildo and it’ll be different for everybody.

For those who are new to dildos, you may want to opt for what’s known as a slim dildo, starter dildo, or warm-up dildo. A small dildo size is a great place to start as you get more comfortable.

So, what size is best?

The size of an average dildo is similar to our trusty stand-by Indie, which offers 6 inches of insertable length. Which is just slightly bigger than the size of an average penis, so if you’re down for that just jump to the average-sized dildos

But, as the name would suggest, beginner dildos are on the smaller side. Beginner dildos are generally around 1 to 1.25 inches wide, 3 to 3.5-inch girth, and 5 inches long. (Beginner maximum is 1.5 inches wide.)

While dildo shopping, your eyes may be drawn to extra large dildos (because they’re definitely attention-grabbing— ) but they might not suit you.

Choosing dildo size should be based on your experience and what you find pleasurable.

#2 What kind of stimulation do you like?

What kind of stimulation do you want your dildo to achieve? Use what you know you like as your guide.

If you find feeling “full” or taking something large really arousing – bring on the lube and go for girth. (For beginners who like girth, go for a 1.5-inch maximum width.)

If you find “shallowing” or g-spot stimulation really pleasurable, opt for a small curved dildo or a slim g-spot dildo.

Classic dildos are static, meaning they don’t vibrate. But internal vibration is generally a crowd-pleaser. If you like internal vibration or also want to use it as clitoral stimulation, look for a vibrating dildo – it really is the best of both worlds.

#3 Buy body-safe material only

Here’s a great rule of thumb: if it feels like jello – run.

You never want to use a dildo made of jelly latex, rubber, Cyberskin, or PVC. These materials are potentially toxic when used internally and can absorb and harbor bacteria.

Hands down, silicone is best. It’s safe for the body, can last forever, it’s non-porous, easily cleaned, and feels great.

Also consider: If you like deep penetration choose a firm dildo. If the dildo is flexible or soft it’ll be more difficult to stimulate deeply.

#3 Big spender, who?

If you’re new to dildos, chances are you’ll need to try a few before you find a size, shape, and design you really like. So, don’t go buying the highest tech toy you can find as your very first dildo. Chances are you’ll be a bit like goldilocks until you find a fave. (Save the splurge for when you know exactly what you want.)

Opt for beginner dildos that are around the $35- $55 mark. These dildos are generally good quality, but it won’t be a loss when you “break up” in a few months to move up in size or function.

Play the field and try a few beginner dildos when you’re new to sex toys.

#4 It’s about the motion of the ocean

Of course, it’s important to choose a well when it comes to size, material, and cost. But equally important is how you use the dildo.

Three golden rules of using a dildo are:

  • Get aroused af before using
  • Use water-based lube
  • Start slow

Besides that, your technique is everything and there are many things you can try when you’re new to dildos. For more tips read our detailed guide about how you use dildos for beginners.

#5 Get more bang for your buck and go for versatility

If you want to get the most out of your beginner dildo – opt for versatility. When you’re just starting out and exploring, avoid buying a one-trick pony.

Try to find dildos that are optimized for both internal and external use, such as vibrating dildos and tickler dildos. These dildos are great for arousal, clit stimulation, annnnd penetration.

Because you should be very aroused before using penetrative toys, using a vibration setting on the vulva before penetration is a great idea.
