So, you want to know how to use a dildo? Well, you’ve made it to the corner of the internet where we love to talk about that sort of thing. Despite 78% of women owning a dildo, how to exactly use one isn’t often talked about. No bother, we’ll gladly take the reins and offer all the details.

"Okay Batman, we'll take it from here."

In this article, we cover everything from the various types of dildos, best use tips, and step-by-step technique guidance.

Keep scrolling for advice on how to use a dildo for maximum pleasure. (Pssst - it’s all in your technique.)

What is a dildo?

Before we get into how to use a dildo, let’s cover the dildo basics.

Dildos are penetrative sex toys that are used for internal stimulation. They come in a variety of phallic shapes (but that doesn’t necessarily mean they look realistic, although they can).

Dildos are great for masturbation, double penetration, pegging, and strapping.

There are SO many types of dildos

There is no one approach to how to use a dildo properly just as there is no one type of dildo.

When it comes to penetration toys there are endless shapes, sizes, aesthetics, and capabilities to choose from.

Before becoming a dildo master, you first must choose which dildo is best for you.

Here are some of the most common types of dildos:

  • Realistic dildos: These types of dildos are designed to resemble a real penis. Some are only kind of realistic (shape-wise) while others have skin-like material, veins, balls, etc. Some even heat up to simulate a real penis.
  • Non-realistic dildos: These are phallic toys but they don’t resemble a penis -- instead are designed with a stimulation goal in mind. These are generally longer, textured, have customizable g-spot hitting curves, and/or have an arch to the shaft.
  • Vibrating dildos: This is the best of both worlds. Vibrating dildos have internal vibrators that stimulate the vaginal canal and g-spot with a range of vibrations. Vibrating dildos are versatile and can be used as a static dildo or a vibrating dildo. (You can use the vibrator on the clitoral area too!)
  • Static dildos: Classic dildos generally don’t vibrate and are used as static penetrative toys. We think that’s a bit of a missed opportunity.
  • Hard dildos: Some dildos are made out of hard, non-porous materials like glass or metal.
  • Soft dildos: The safest soft dildos are often made out of silicone and may also bend for g-spot stimulation. Super squishy jelly-like dildos should be used with caution as the material often used in production can be toxic to the body.
  • Double-ended dildos: These super fun dildos are designed to be used by two partners simultaneously. These can be used vaginally and anally.
  • Suction cup dildos: These dildos have a suction cup at the base of the shaft that can adhere the dildo to walls, floors, or chairs for hands-free orgasms.

First steps: how to use a dildo for the first time

We’ll get into the juicy technique guidance in a minute, but first, let’s cover your dildo bases.

🍆  Choose the right dildo

When you’re getting your first dildo- shop around and consider what size is best for you. Decide if you want your dildo to vibrate or not. (We recommend vibrating dildos bc you get more bang for your buck – literally.)

Don’t go spending a huge amount of money on your first luxury dildo -- you may find you don’t like the size, material, or the lack of bells and whistles. Start simple but not low-end (aim for the $50 sweet spot). Then once you know what you like, buy whatever tickles your fancy.

🧼 Clean your dildo

It’s best to clean your dildo before and after you use it. This can be done with lukewarm water and gentle soap. If it’s a vibrating dildo (with internal electric parts) don’t submerge the toy in water -- most are only splashproof.

🔥 Get aroused first (!!)

We encourage everyone to get very aroused before using any kind of sex toy. But this is especially true for dildos!

Arousal is a prerequisite to penetration of any kind. When a vulva-owner is aroused the vaginal muscles relax, the vaginal walls fill with blood and the canal becomes naturally lubricated. This is all necessary for frictionless, enjoyable penetration.

To get ready for penetration turn yourself on by setting the mood, touching yourself, or busting out your fave erotica. Whatever floats your boat -- do it before using your dildo.

👅 Lube up babe

Lubricant is the dildo’s best friend. You want to be able to slip and slide when stimulating internally. Without proper lubrication using a dildo might not feel that great.

And yes, you may already be wet, but there is no such thing as too much lubricant when it comes to penetrative toys.

Remember: Use water-based lube with silicone sex toys (not silicone-based lube.)

How to use a dildo: 8 top tips for dildo play

While there is no “right way” to use a dildo, (do what feels good babe) there are some top tips to keep in mind while exploring. Here are our top 9 tips for how to use a dildo like a pro.

Remember: A dildo is not like a clitoral vibrator that does most of the work for you, your technique will determine how pleasurable a dildo will be.

So when you’re aroused, lubed up, and ready to go -- try these tips.

#1 Tease yourself with the dildo

Tease, tease, tease. Don’t just go straight in -- try teasing yourself around the vulva and vaginal opening. This “warm-up” can go a long way to prepare for penetration. This kind of teasing can build up your arousal so when you do go all in, it will be even more pleasurable. Vibrating dildos are great for teasing because they add an extra layer of stimulation to the party.

#2 Start with shallow penetration

Hold the dildo by the base and insert it just 2 - 3 inches into the vagina. The first ⅓ of the vaginal canal is the most sensitive, so starting here, with a shallow in-and-out motion. Start slow and speed up to whatever rhythm feels good.

Tip: To help insert the toy, make sure to lube up the tip and try rotating the toy when easing it inside.

#3 G marks the spot!

Stimulate the top of the vaginal canal to stimulate your infamous g-spot. This area is also around 2 inches into the vaginal canal -- found on the upper vaginal wall. Try angling your dildo and your pelvis, so the dildo presses against the top wall of the vagina. You may end up finding a spot that is very pleasurable when stimulated in short bursts.

You can also try to rotate the dildo (not in an in-and-out motion, but in small circles). Also, try finding the spot and then using your hips to rock against the dildo.

#4 Try a deep thrusting motion

You may enjoy deep trusting penetration that stimulates the entire length of the vagina. Try trusting motions that reach deeply and come almost all the way out. It may also feel good to switch between shallow and deep thrusts.

If the dildo is very squishy (not recommended) this might be hard to achieve.

#5 Go for slow and steady thrusting

Try a slow, motion-of-the-ocean type trusting. This is great for building up an orgasm or edging an orgasm. (Edging is when you teeter right on the edge of a climax -- it’s *chef kiss.*)

#6 Twist it

No matter if you are stimulating in short or deep bursts, try rotating the dildo at the entrance of the vagina. The entrance of the vagina is packed full of nerve endings so this can offer delicious extra stimulation.

#7 Switch up the positioning

You can always use your dildo in various positions. Each position will offer a different kind of sensation because you’ll be reaching different angles within the vagina. Try using a dildo on your back, on your knees, on your side, and on your stomach.

#8 Let it ride

Some like to let the dildo simply sit in the vaginal canal while they stimulate the clitoris and enjoy that “full” feeling.

You’ll find what feels good -- trust yourself

We hope our tips on how to use a dildo like a pro were helpful. But remember, most things will come naturally if we can let ourselves explore what feels good.

Just listen to your body and keep these tips in the back of your mind. After you’ve taken your dildo for a few test rides you’ll find your rhythm and learn what really lights your fire. There’s no right or wrong here.
